Chapter 19:

I hadn't realized how long we had been inside. By the time we made it back out into the street it was lit only by the moon’s glow, and the nighttime air said hello with a chill that was anything but welcoming. I knew we needed to find a safe place for the night, somewhere out of the way of regular traffic through the city, somewhere warm.

There was an old theater that I used to live in through most of my teenage years. It wasn’t a movie theater like Tinker's, but one with a stage and rows upon rows of seats. I'd seen pictures hung up on the walls there of people dressed up in amazing clothes as they performed for the audience. Sometimes, I'd imagine myself as one of the actors, and twirl about on the stage rehearsing made up lines in costumes I'd found laying around, though I doubt my plays were as good as those I’d imagined the ghost of the past acting out before me.

The walls were lined with several floors of special closed off rooms with few seats in each. I guessed the most important people would sit there and watch what was going on below, but I found that was the safest place to sleep. If anyone had actually stumbled into my little theater I'd watch them from above, hiding in the shadows or behind one of the still hanging curtains as they explored.

Hardly anyone ever made it past the stage, or even upstairs, since getting caught on a high up floor could be dangerous without a real place to run, so most of us with experience knew to avoid that. I used that knowledge to my advantage and went up there anyway, knowing that as long as I kept a low profile and covered my tracks not even other Stigma holders would find me.

It's a sad thing to admit but we can be our own enemy, fighting for food and resources, or simply for a better hiding spot—not to mention the threat of coming across a roaming gang with no allegiance to anyone but themselves. There wasn't a true sense of law out here, but most still stood to their basic human morals to keep the peace, and of course there were those who didn’t.

Still, few ever bothered to go into that theater, and only once had I seen an Agent investigate. He walked all the way down the middle aisle to the stage and took a broad look around, scanning for anything more unusual than an abandoned theater all set up with props that were left in place and forgotten. I remember watching him light up a cigarette and say something into his headset, though I couldn't hear from where I was. He took a long drag and let out a plume of smoke before he turned to leave.

I knew that this was probably the safest place to go, so again I lead Ava and Demi through the city, trying to
